Durham Provides Police Chief Search Update
Online Surveys Now More Mobile-Friendly
DURHAM, N.C. - Applicants from all over the country have applied for the Durham police chief position and 14 of the 42 candidates have been chosen to proceed to the next steps.
"I was pleased to see such a significant number of highly qualified applicants for the position," said City Manager Tom Bonfield, who with search firm Developmental Associates, LLC<https://www.developmentalassociates.com/>, narrowed the field of applicants last week. "Even though we're at this stage, community input will still be important going forward, and we encourage the public to take advantage of the opportunities to share their thoughts, including the surveys and forums."
These 14 applicants will now undergo a more extensive screening process, including a telephone interview and writing exercise over the next two weeks, Bonfield said. Based on those responses, a smaller number of candidates will then be selected to participate in an assessment center, scheduled for February 29 through March 1. Once the results of the assessment center are determined, the top two-to-three finalists will be scheduled to meet with police department staff and with the public in late March. The City is still on track with the recruitment process and the timeline as previously announced with the goal of having the position offered by early April, and the selected candidate starting in May.
Since community input is still being sought, Developmental Associates, LLC is hosting a second forum for the Latino community to provide input. This forum, conducted entirely in Spanish, will be held on Sunday, February 14, 2016, at 2:45 p.m., immediately following Mass in the sanctuary of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church<http://icdurham.org/index.php/en/>, located at 810 W. Chapel Hill St. The first forum was held at El Centro Hispano on December 15 and was conducted in English with parts translated into Spanish.
The City is also encouraging residents to complete an online survey - in English at http://bit.ly/durhampolicechiefsearch and in Spanish at http://bit.ly/durhampolicechiefsearchspanish - to give input on what they want in the next police chief. Thus far, only 427 surveys in English and seven surveys in Spanish have been completed since mid-December and more community participation is needed to help the City select the right candidate for Durham. To help encourage more residents to complete the online survey, the City's search firm has tweaked the layout to make both surveys easier to complete on mobile devices.
