Bike Month is around the corner and we encourage you to come out to
participate in one or more events during the month of May.

*Sunday, May 5 is Bike Month Kick-off: Bike to Connections ride from west
Durham to east Durham* weaving over and under the Durham Freeway. There
are five starting times for the ride every 30 minutes from noon to 2:00pm.
If you aren't able to do the ride, but would like to meet folks at the
celebration, you can join us at the courtyard behind Mike D's BBQ at 455 S.
Driver Street between noon and 5pm. Please register for a ride or the
celebration at this link
<https://www.eventbrite.com/e/2024-bike-month-kick-off-bike-to-connections-tickets-882700961337?aff=oddtdtcreator>.
This event is one of the engagement activities for the City's Reimagining
the Durham Freeway study.

*Wednesday, May 8 is Bike, Walk, and Roll to School Day. *Schools across
Durham will be holding events to celebrate biking, walking, and rolling to
school. Some schools hold their events on this date, others hold them at
other times during the month when it works better for their schedule. If
you would like to attend one of these events, please contact Jacopo
Montobbio at jacopo at bikedurham.org.

*Wednesday, May 15 is the Ride of Silence. *This is the annual remembrance
of those who have lost friends or family members who were killed while
riding their bike. We gather at CCB Plaza and start with remarks beginning
just after 5:30pm. The bike ride begins at 6:00pm and proceeds slowly for
a 4.3 mile route through downtown. This distance represents the 43 people
who were killed while riding bikes in North Carolina last year. One of
those killed was Dean Hutchinson, killed while riding on Anderson Street
last August. Please let us know if you can attend at this link

*Thursday, May 16 is Bike to Work Day.* You can join others at either the
CCB Plaza (stature of Major the Bull) by 7:30am to leave at 8am or at one
of two locations in South Durham, Southpoint Mall (exact location TBD) or
the Lowes Parking Lot by the garden center at MLK and Fayetteville (this
location may change). The riders will converge at Acme Plumbing (4625
Industry Lane off of MLK) and continue to Boxyard RTP. The Research
Triangle Foundation is hosting a light breakfast at Beyu Caffe at Boxyard
RTP! RSVP here.

*Monday, May 20 is Bike Durham's eBike Expo. * This event from 5:30pm -
7:00pm is free and open to the public. It is an opportunity to come
together to see and touch and test-ride e-Bikes. You can also hear from
experts about how to choose the e-bike that's right for you; how to
maintain your e-bike; and ways that riding an e-bike is a little different
than riding other bikes. We're requesting registration at this link

.

*Wednesday, May 22 is the Biking While Black video **screening and panel
discussion**. * Bike Durham, Just Cities Collective, Aidilisms, and Durham
Bicycle & Pedestrian Advisory Commission are excited to present BIKING
WHILE BLACK: HOW SAFE ARE BLACK LIVES BICYCLING?, a documentary project
that gathered stories of community members, advocates, community-based
organizations, and city agencies around the topic of Black Lives bicycling
in Los Angeles. The film includes conversations about over policing,
historic disinvestment in infrastructure, racism, racial profiling, while
also celebrating Black joy through cycling. The screening of the video
will be followed by a panel discussion with the filmmaker, Yolanda
Davis-Overstreet, and three local Black bike riders - Simone Hamlett (shero
for Black Girls Do Bike-Triangle chapter), Justin Laidlaw, and Derrick
Beasley. Tickets are limited to 60 participants. Reserve your tickets now!
