[Durham INC] DEQ Public Hearing Eno River , Teer Quarry Drinking Wate

Wanted to share this with the group in case anyone was interested.

Durham folks, there's an important meeting Thursday night that on the
surface looks like a snooze but actually is quite crucial for the city's
drinking water supply.
The City is proposing to pump water from a portion of the Eno during high
flow and to store it in Teer Quarry for a future drinking water supply. The
quarry was owned by Hanson Aggregates. It's at the end of Denfield St,
north of Horton, south of Infinity & east of Roxboro.
The problem is the groundwater near the quarry is contaminated with several
chemical compounds, including benzene, a known carcinogen, and 1,4-dioxane,
a likely carcinogen. The contamination is migrating toward the quarry pit,
where the water will be stored.
